Mind and Muscle for Management

MIND & MUSCLE FOR MANAGEMENT

Development training & team building courses for business and the professions.
DialogueWorks' Mind & Muscle programme is unique. Its blend of outdoor activities and dialogue sessions transforms personal and group accountability for policy and action. Its reflective dialogical process optimises long-term transfer of the learning experience back to the workplace.
It has long been accepted that outdoor pursuits can be an effective medium for personal development, enhancing leadership, team building, and personal skills. Our 3-day courses are designed to explore and enhance a person's ability in planning, problem solving, decision making, effective communication, and time and resource management.
Each day, participants have the opportunity to analyse their own and their group's performance. This is achieved by means of a 'team inquiry' between participants conducted by a highly experienced dialogue facilitator.
The outdoor instructors and the facilitator ensure that the main learning points are identified, and that participants understand how to relate them back to their personal and working life.

Outdoors

The outdoor activities, which can include a 3-day camping journey, offer rich opportunities to intensify people’s experiences and learning. Participants are often concerned about their safety and their abilities. Such contexts help to create awareness about the limits of what they can do or are prepared to do. It also raises vital questions about responsibility and accountability.

Indoors

The indoor sessions stimulated by the outdoor activities encourage:

  • Reflection on thoughts and actions and the relationship between them (How did I act? How should I act?);
  • Development of intellectual virtues such as patience, courage, fair-mindedness, tenacity, openness;
  • Awareness of other people’s thoughts, feelings and perspectives (Do we mean the same thing when we use a particular word?);
  • Decentring and greater reasonableness in thoughts and actions (What ought I do or think if I reflect critically?);
  • Shaping and reshaping of central concepts, such as courage, fairness, cooperation (What exactly do we mean with the words we use all the time?);
  • Consistency between what we think and do (I think this, so how should I treat this person?).

Participants have to think for themselves, but with others. This process creates a space whereby everyone can be asked to justify what they say or do in the enquiries. This caring, but critical environment will create opportunities for lasting change. Our programmes offer opportunities to be part of a small, interdependent community, offering a chance to get to know colleagues in a unique way. Continuous reviewing and self-assessment helps to secure transfer of what has been learned during the journey to their everyday lives.

Outcomes

  • Appreciation of the diversity of points of view;
  • Improved understanding of each other's actions and motives;
  • Deeper insight into some of the concepts central to relationships in personal and business  lives, eg courage, leadership, trust, care, tenacity, reliability, patience and cooperation.

It is by getting to the root of such issues that each member is able to retain the understanding gained from the particular experience, and is able to apply the principles involved to other related experiences when they return to their everyday personal and working lives.
